Dementia causes considerable memory loss and reduced cognitive abilities and can make a person feel disoriented in their surroundings. While everybody feels slightly dazed when the leaves turn, it can be more difficult for someone with dementia to acclimate.
We aim to provide compassionate care to all of our patients at NewAldaya Lifescapes. Because seasonal variation can negatively influence dementia patients, we believe it’s crucial to understand what they’re going through.
The most profound changes occur when the fall season inevitably leads to winter. The daylight hours get shorter, and the temperature falls dramatically. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a regular phenomenon (SAD). People with dementia may experience sundowning, which can impact their temperament and conduct.
As a caregiver, you can keep an eye out for signs of sundowning in a patient so that you can adequately care for them. The most telltale symptoms of sundowning include increased irritation, disorientation, and pacing or roaming.
During this vulnerable period, there are a few things you can do, including:
On a positive note, the sundowning phenomenon is often only momentary; it will be gone once spring arrives. There are various opportunities to make the time go faster for yourself or your loved ones. It’s necessary to stick to a schedule. If the patient goes to bed at 8 p.m. every night, they should do so throughout the year.
You can also ensure the patient receives as much environmental light as possible. Spending time in an outdoor space increases sleep hygiene for people with dementia. Since the air may be chilly, you can take steps to keep them toasty while allowing them to get some fresh air.
We provide dementia patients with the most up-to-date treatment at our institution. Song, creativity, and animal interaction are all highly recommended therapies. Spiritual support can also help lessen sundowning for individuals with dementia.
